Foi edificada no princípio do séc. XX no preciso local onde existiu o Convento de S. Bento de Avé-Maria, com cobertura de vidro e ferro fundido, da autoria do arquitecto Marques da Silva.
O átrio está revestido com vinte mil azulejos historiados, do pintor Jorge Colaço, que ilustram a evolução dos transportes e cenas da história e vida portuguesas.
